1.     Declutter Like Crazy

Before you begin organizing, take the time to thoroughly declutter your house. Remove everything from the shelves and drawers one by one. Donate any extra stuff you find after discarding expired items.

Bid farewell to everything that does not neatly fit in your cupboards and drawers. For example, let go of the blender that you never seem to get back the right way, and replace it with one that can be accommodated in your drawer with ease.

If you have items that you want to preserve for future use, put them in the storage facilities. Unlike in the past, you can find a customized storage unit in just a few clicks nowadays. For instance, if you live in Houston, just randomly typing “storage Houston” in the search engine will show you plenty of nearby storage facilities.

2.     Make Your Garbage Cans More Visible

If your family leaves trash in the kitchen or living room, you should make it easier for them to dispose of it. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for households to have half-open cans hidden beneath a cabinet.

Remove the lid completely from the trash can and place it in a central spot. Even though it does not look that pretty, leaving trash on the counters probably is not the best option either.

3.     Do Not Leave The Room Empty-Handed

In any given room, you are likely to find a toy, blanket, cup, or t-shirt that needs to be moved to a different place. Since you are always strolling around from one room to another, why not take a hitchhiker or two with you? Clutter control will become a habit if you examine every room before you leave.

4.     Streamline Socks

The mere mention of laundry is enough to make your stomach turn. You begin by sorting them, then you wash them, then you sort them once more, and finally, you fold and put them away. Sounds like a ton of work!

You can save a few steps and avoid getting caught up in a mountain of laundry. Get rid of all your old socks and purchase only one color that you frequently wear. That way, you will get away with finding and matching different colors of your socks.

5.     Think Vertical

Are you dealing with limited storage? Well, perhaps it is about time you make the most of the tops of your kitchen cabinets, refrigerator, and so on.

To access anything that is stored higher up, you will need to use a step stool. However, this strategy also helps to keep less frequently used objects out of sight and out of the way of locations that are prone to be cluttered.

6.     Keep Similar Items Together

By categorizing your stuff, you can easily keep track of everything. You might have noticed that it is much easier to clean up a mess if you keep all of your cleaning products in one location. As a bonus, you will also be able to identify what is not being used.

7.     Designate A Place For Everything In Your Home

Once you have put similar objects together, keep them in a designated location. When an item is not in use, it is considered trash if it does not occupy a specific area. Silverware is an example of an item that everyone has a place for in their home.

For example, if you find a fork under a sofa, you know where it belongs. It ought to be this simple to put everything away. If you do not know where something will go, you are better off not bringing it into your house. Everyone living with you should be aware of this as well.

8.     Create A System For Paperwork

An efficient filing system is the key to keeping your house organized. The first step is to gather all of your papers from around the house. You do not want to waste time scurrying from one room to another hunting for important documents like birth certificates or marriage certificates.

So, start by gathering all of your documents in one place so that you have a clear picture of what needs to be done.  Next up, divide your documents into four categories – action, archive, household, and recycle. Read on to know what goes into each category:

  • Action: As the title indicates, these are the documents that you need to act upon. A good example of action documents is bills, invitations, appointment reminders, etc. You do not need them anymore once you have taken action on them.
  • Archive: Archives include documents that you must keep for reference purposes. Deeds, tax returns, academic records, medical records, warranties, and leases fall under this category.
  • Household: Documents pertaining to the household are the ones that are necessary for the smooth operation of the home. Sometimes people get confused between archive and household documents. Well, the core difference between the two is the frequency with which you use them to access specific information. As a rule of thumb, you must put the documents in the archive pile if you only access them once or twice a year at most. On the other hand, you should put the documents in the household pile if you need to refer to them more often.
  • Recycle: These are documents that do not contain any personal information. A few examples include envelopes, old papers, magazines, and junk mail.

9.     Maintain a Junk Drawer

Maintaining a junk drawer means you can relieve some of the stress associated with organizing various small items. That being said, it is very easy to let the contents of your junk drawer get out of control. Therefore, when you find something that you do not require, immediately toss it out of the drawer so that it does not turn into a cluttered mess.

Conclusion

There are several benefits to living in a well-organized home. Studies have even revealed that a cluttered space might trigger stress to a significant degree. Fortunately, putting your house in order is not as time-consuming and exhausting as it may appear at first. Just stick to the hacks listed above, and, before you know it, you will have an immaculate living space.
